Association Football, that is also described as soccer, or just plain football, has become the game with the most international support. North America have a different national game called football or American football that is completely different. North Americans do participate in soccer too, but with nothing like the passion they connect to their own style of play. A great deal of endeavor has been used to increase the popularity of the global game in their country, so far they have not proved to be completely successful, but it would be marvelous if they joined their South American neighbors.

Soccer isn't a hard game to learn the basics of, but in a contest between two competing groups of eleven players there must be rules. Out on the pitch a match is managed by a referee, whose job it is to guarantee the rules are observed, and that the rules are correctly interpreted. Should violations arise he has the right to make a range of decisions, the most serious of which is sending a player off, often because of over aggressive or obviously injurious play. The other side then has the edge of eleven men against ten, that frequently changes the end result of a game. There are linesmen, who assist in deciding when the ball is out of play, when players commit fouls, and in other requirements.

Football is a big player in the entertainment business, and has wide commercial and social implications. In the past, it was gate monies that were to the fore in generating the funds to sustain the clubs, but more recently there has been something of an explosion, that has developed soccer into a global entertainment business. Huge amounts of money are concerned in media deals, which has encouraged the rapid development of armchair viewers. Millions more fans still travel to support their favorites. Sports have become big business, within which nothing is more significant than international soccer.

The international nature of football is exemplified by the contest identified as the World Cup. The tournament changes location to various parts of the world, and there are eliminatory stages to go through, before thirty two international squads play for the trophy, at four yearly intervals, over a period lasting about a month. It is reported, that the Jules Rimet Trophy draws an audience calculated to be about double the number, that view the Summer Olympics.

It is not easy to work out why international soccer has expanded into the sporting enterprise it has become. You may wonder how it is that two teams of eleven players, kicking a ball about for two 45 minute spells, with a fifteen-minute break as an interval, gather such passionate interest. Possibly it is because there are young men and occasionally women, in great physical shape, who through their fitness, present excitement in a game with which so many people can identify. It offers a chance to reminisce, and think - if only!
