Association football is commonly referred to as plain football, but is also called soccer, to differentiate it from the entirely different
version, that is played in the United States. Even though soccer is less popular in the United States, that great country has produced a number
of fine players, some of whom have been sought out to play in major tournaments such as the English Premier League. Predictably, the
international status of soccer has not escaped the attention of American businessmen, and a few of them have invested large amounts of money, in
some of the best established football clubs in the world.
Progressing from its ordinary origins, soccer has increased its appeal, to be transformed into the most popular sport in the world. Global soccer
is now a vast sports business. Well known footballers, represent football clubs that are household names, and function as large business
enterprises. The sport has attracted successful entrepreneurs as chairmen, and the best footballers and coaches obtain financial rewards
equivalent to movie icons.
Football grounds are fantastic, show places, that can contain many thousands of people. If the ticket price for major matches was about forty
dollars, the gate money would be $4 million. Even that sum is insignificant, compared to what broadcasting and other commercial organizations are
willing to offer for special deals. Clearly football is a global sports business, with senior directors, managers, and players, getting rewards
equal to Hollywood stars, and movie tycoons.
The international nature of football is typified by the tournament known as the FIFA World Cup. The tournament takes place in different
countries, and there are preliminaries to pass, before 32 national teams play for the cup, every four years, over a period lasting about a month.
Astonishingly, the FIFA World Cup attracts spectators and viewers reckoned to be about twice the total, of those that view the Olympic Games.
There is no straightforward solution as to why global soccer has expanded to be the entertainment giant it is today. You may wonder how it is
that squads of eleven footballers, passing a ball about for an hour and a half, with a fifteen-minute break part way through, gather such
enthusiastic interest. Perhaps it is because there are young sportsmen, in great physical shape, who through their skill, present excitement in a
sport with which so many people can identify. It offers a chance to reminisce, and think - if only!
