Although people have teamed up to kick a ball around for ages, the game of football or international soccer was subjected to rules in England in the 19th century. Today, the international body known as FIFA, oversees the great game of football.

Whilst football has its roots in the working class, there is more to the game than a recent supporter might initially consider. Simply stated the game involves two teams of eleven players who face one another on a football ground, with dimensions of around 100 yards long X 50 yards wide. Football's commercial progress is the upshot, not solely from spectators flooding into enormous stadiums through the ticket points, but also from media exposure, where fortunes are paid for the privilege of broadcasting games. From gate money, to media rights, big time sponsors, to copy football shirts, a major sporting enterprise has been created. It is not easy to say why worldwide soccer has developed into the sports colossus it has become. It is astonishing that twenty two men, kicking a ball around for an hour and a half, with a short break in the middle, merit such fanatical attention. Perhaps it is because there are young men, and sometimes young women, in the prime of their lives, who through their expertise, show off thrills and spills in a sport with which so many people can identify. In a sense it may be a case of there, by the grace of god, go I!
