Huge amounts of money are involved in TV deals, which has inspired the massive growth in armchair viewing. However, millions still travel to watch their favorite teams. Nearly all sports have become big business, within which nothing is more significant than global soccer.

Football's global appeal is epitomized by the tournament known as the Jules Rimet Trophy. This competition is held in various countries and continents, and there are preliminaries to pass, before thirty two teams from countries all over the world compete for the trophy, at four yearly intervals, over a period lasting about a month. It is reported, that the FIFA World Cup draws viewers and spectators calculated to be about double the number, that watch the Olympic Games.

There is no simple answer as to why global soccer has grown to be the sports enterprise it is today. It is astonishing that twenty two men, passing a ball about for two 45 minute spells, with a short break part way through, gather such fervent interest. It may be because there are young sportsmen, in great physical shape, who through their fitness, present excitement in a game that people have played at college and beyond. It offers a chance to reminisce, and think - if only!
