You may have heard that horse racing is the Sport of Kings, but soccer, or football,, is the King of Sports. The word soccer originated from
from the term 'association football', and at least serves to differentiate the global sport, from that played in the United States. People have
gathered together to boot a ball, or other object around, for many hundreds of years. Rules for the game, we have come to know, were decided in
the United Kingdom, in the mid nineteenth century. Previous to this the sport had a somewhat rough and aggressive standing, to the extent that it
was forebidden on occasions, by the monarch.
Whilst soccer has humble beginnings, there is more to the game than a recent supporter might think. Essentially a soccer game comprises of eleven
members who oppose each other on a field of play, that measures about 100 yards long X 50 yards wide. The object of the game is to score goals
using any part of the body except the hands, but typically the feet or the head. Each team is comprised of defenders, half backs, and forwards. A
special kind of defender is called the goalkeeper, who is the only member of a team who is allowed to handle the ball to protect his goal.
Football's commercial progress has resulted, not just from spectators packing into huge stadiums through the turnstiles, but also from television
cover, where vast sums are paid for the privilege of televising matches. Thinking back to 1930 the most important prize, the world cup, was won
in almost equal measure by Latin American and European national teams. Intercontinental soccer is a very, very, big industry. From turnstile
receipts, to television rights, sponsorships, to copy football gear, a mammoth sporting enterprise has come about. Small boys and grown men, and
quite a number of women and girls, crave to wear the strips of the favourite clubs or players. Many of them boot balls around in parks,
wasteland, and also on quiet streets.
Lots of sports, including soccer have achieved much in international cooperation. For instance there are some clubs, in the English Premier
League, that have selected teams entirely made up of overseas players. Of greater significance to most fans, isn't where a player was born, but
his talent. Obviously the more accomplished a footballer proves to be, the more desirable he is to major clubs. Happily great footballers
continue to appear from all over the globe.
Young people, aspire to build that extra piece of talent, which will catapult them into fantastic wealth, and recognition. Most will move on to
do different things, but rarely a young soccer genius will appear, and astound the sporting world with a talent which could be highly
remunerated, in the name of "The King of Sports".
