Association Football, which is otherwise known as soccer, or more usually football, is the game with the most international support. The United States have a different national game called football or American football which is entirely different. North Americans do play soccer too, but lacking the fervor they connect to their national style. Even though attempts have been made to increase the popularity of the world game in their country, as yet they have not been completely successful, but it would be wonderful if they joined their South American neighbors.

It would be easy to oversimplify soccer, and the function of footballers, but the sport involves great skill. Therefore, professional footballers are stars, and those who make the top grade can earn wages running up to tens of thousands of dollars per week. Competition to attain the required standard is severe, but there are numerous instances of exceptional children from poor backgrounds, progressing to become first rate footballers. It is a fact though, that those that do reach the top, to take home the millions, are rare, and the vast majority will end up as supporters.

Football grounds are amazing, purpose built structures, that can accommodate up to 100,000 people. If the entry price for major matches was around £20, gate receipts would be two million pounds. However, such sums are paltry, measured against what television and other commercial entities are willing to pay for special deals. Clearly soccer is a global recreation operation, with senior directors, managers, and players, getting rewards comparable with Hollywood stars, and movie tycoons.

International football has been a great unifier but it hasn't been devoid of some difficulties, during the process. Professionals from all ethnic groups have become recognized entirely on merit, when they have been sought after by clubs in other countries. The best players from Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, Africa and the United States are almost legendary, and they are often transferred between clubs in the international football world. Fortunately this has done much in getting rid of intolerant race related behaviour.

Young people, aspire to build that additional bit of skill, which could shoot them into a world of riches, and fame. Many will settle for different things, but rarely a young protégé will surface, and astonish the sporting world with a talent which will be highly remunerated, in the name of "The King of Sports".
