Many footballers, play for football clubs which are household names, and function as large commercial undertakings. The sport has attracted powerful and rich people as owners, and top footballers and managers receive salaries equal to movie stars.

Football is a big player in the leisure business, and has far reaching financial and cultural significance. Previously, it was the turnstiles that were to the fore in generating the cash to support the clubs, but in recent times there has been something of an explosion, that has transformed soccer into a worldwide leisure colossus. Huge amounts of money are involved in TV rights, which has inspired the expansive growth of armchair viewers. However, millions still attend football stadiums to watch their favorites. Many sports have become large commercial undertakings, within which nothing is more significant than global football.

Star footballers are emerging in various places that include, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Not to forget the USA, helped along by their staging of the world cup in 1994. Astonishingly the Glazer family of Tampa Bay renown, have acquired Manchester United, reputed to be the worlds most wealthy football club. It would be impossible to put a figure on the combined worth of the major footballers, and the clubs they are signed up for.

There is no simple answer as to why global football has grown into the entertainment enterprise it now is. It is amazing that squads of eleven footballers, kicking a ball about for two 45 minute spells, with a short break as an interval, attract such enthusiastic attention. Perhaps it is because there are young men, and sometimes young women, in the prime of their lives, who through their ability, show off excitement in a sport that lots of people have played. In a sense it may be a case of there, by the grace of god, go I!
