Association Football, that is otherwise identified as soccer, or more usually football, is now the sport with the most international support. North America have a different national game called football or American football which is completely different. North Americans do play soccer as well, but not with the passion they attach to their own style of football. Much effort has been made to develop the international game in their country, as yet they haven't been wholly successful, but it would be marvelous if they joined their South American neighbors.

Although football has working class roots, there is more to the game than a newcomer may think. Essentially the game involves two teams of eleven members who contest against each other on a specially marked out field, that measures about 90 meters long x 45 meters wide. The objective is to score goals by using any part of the body excluding the hands, but usually the feet or the head. Each team is comprised of attackers, midfielders, and defenders. One significant defender is known as the goalkeeper, who is the only member of a team who is allowed to use his hands and arms to save goals.

There is a lot more to football than many people think, as it has far reaching financial and cultural interests. In the past, it was the turnstiles that were responsible for producing the funds to finance the clubs, but in recent years there has been something of an explosion, that has developed the sport into a worldwide leisure industry. Huge sums of money are concerned in media rights, which has inspired the rapid development of stay at home spectators. However, millions still attend football grounds to support their favorite teams. Many sports have become big business, within which there is nothing bigger than worldwide football.

Global soccer has assisted with race relations, but that has not been lacking some difficulties, although the situation has greatly improved. Footballers of all races have become renowned entirely on merit, when they have been signed up by clubs outside the country of their birth. Top players from Europe, South America, Asia, Australia, Africa and the United States are almost legendary, and they are regularly transferred for vast sums of money in the international football market. This has gone a long way towards getting rid of prejudiced race related behaviour.

There is no straightforward answer as to why worldwide football has expanded into the entertainment enterprise it has become. It is astonishing that squads of eleven footballers, passing a ball around for 90 minutes, with a short break part way through, gather such fervent interest. Perhaps it is because there are young men and occasionally women, in great physical shape, who through their athleticism, provide thrills and spills in a sport that lots of people have played. It supplies a chance, to wonder what might have been, if only you had thought about football as a career!
