If horse racing is the Sport of Kings then football, or soccer, is the King of Sports. The term soccer is derived from the term 'association
football', and at least helps to distinguish the global game, from that which dominates in the United States. People have joined together to boot
a ball, or other object around, for many hundreds of years. Rules for the game, we have come to know, were decided in the United Kingdom, in the
middle of the nineteenth century. Before this the game had a rather rough and violent reputation, to the degree that it was prohibited at times,
by the king.
Whilst football has working class roots, the game is more complex than a newcomer may think. Essentially a football match comprises of eleven
players who contest against each other on a football ground, with dimensions of approximately 90 meters long x 45 meters wide. The object of the
game is to score goals using any part of the body but not the hands, but generally the feet or the head. Opposing teams comprise of defenders,
midfielders, and attackers. One of the defenders is called the goalkeeper, who is permitted to handle the ball to protect his goal.
Soccer arenas are amazing, show places, that can contain many thousands of people. If the ticket price for important games was around £20, gate
receipts would be two million pounds. Such sums are almost trivial, measured against what broadcasting and other companies are willing to pay for
media rights. Without doubt football is a global sports business, with senior players, managers, and owners, receiving payment comparable with
movie stars, and movie moguls.
Sport in general, and football in particular, has done a great deal to improve international relationships. For instance there are some teams, in
the English Premier League, that have selected teams completely made up of foreign nationals. Of greater significance to most supporters, isn't
the color of a players skin, but his talent. Obviously the more accomplished a player proves to be, the more desirable he is to major clubs.
Thankfully tremendous footballers continue to emerge from all parts of the world.
There is no straightforward solution as to why international football has developed into the entertainment giant it now is. It is astonishing
that squads of eleven footballers, passing a ball around for 90 minutes, with a fifteen-minute break in the middle, attract such fervent
consideration. Possibly it is because there are young men, and sometimes young women, in the prime of their lives, who through their expertise,
show off excitement in a game with which so many people can identify. It offers a chance to reminisce, and think - if only!
