Association Football, that is otherwise known as soccer, or more generally football, is the sport with the most international support. The
United States have their own national game called football or American football which is quite different. They do play soccer as well, but
lacking the enthusiasm they connect to their national style. A great deal of endeavor has been used to increase the popularity of the global game
in their country, so far they have not proved to be entirely successful, but it would be wonderful if they teamed up with their South American
neighbors.
Football isn't a difficult sport to learn the basics of, but in a game involving two rival teams of eleven footballers there has to be laws. In
the playing area the game is presided over by a referee, whose job it is to guarantee the rules are observed, and that the laws of the game are
properly executed. When violations arise he has the power to make a variety of decisions, the most severe of which is ordering a player off the
field, often because of violent or obviously dangerous contact. The opposing team then has the edge of eleven men against ten, that regularly
influences the end result of a game. Two other officials are known as assistant referees, who help in ruling when the ball is outside the field
of play, when players commit fouls, and in other deliberations.
There is much more to football than many people think, as it has broad financial and social ramifications. Until fairly recently, it was the
turnstiles that were to the fore in generating the funds to support the clubs, but in recent years there have been radical changes that have
developed soccer into a global entertainment business. Vast sums of money are concerned in television rights, which has stimulated the massive
development in armchair viewing. Millions more fans still travel to cheer on their favorite clubs. Many sports have become commercial enterprises
as well, within which there is nothing bigger than global soccer.
Sport in general, and football in particular, has done a great deal to improve international cohesion. As an example there are some teams, in the
English Premier League, that have selected teams completely made up of foreign nationals. What is important to the vast majority of fans, isn't
so much the nationality of a player, but his ability. Understandably the better a player turns out to be, the more attractive a proposition he is
to major clubs. Fortunately great footballers are continuing to appear from many countries.
Once upon a time, boxing was amongst few sports, that offered an avenue of opportunity, to escape from poverty. It might be considered that
football has assumed that mantle, and even though only a few contenders make the grade as rich football players, they exceed those who succeed in
the ring. From South America to Africa, Europe, and beyond, young people from poor backgrounds meet up to develop their game. A small proportion
will become recognized as being outstandingly talented, and will be catapulted into rich standards of living, to become pop stars, of the
sporting world.
