Information on current world soccer rankings
As a game association football is normally known simply as football, but is also identified as soccer, to distinguish it from the completely
different version, that is popular in the United States. Notwithstanding that soccer is less common in North America, that huge country has
developed plenty of highly skilled players, some of whom have been signed up to play in top competitions such as the English Premier League.
Predictably, the success of soccer hasn't eluded American entrepreneurs, and some of them have acquired major share holdings, in several of the
best established football teams in the world.
Football is not a hard game to understand, but in a match involving two competing sides of eleven footballers there has to be laws. In the
playing area a match is managed by a referee, whose responsibility it is to guarantee the rules are observed, and that the laws of the game are
correctly interpreted. When they are not he has the right to consider a range of judgements, the most serious of which is dismissing a player,
frequently because of violent or purposefully hazardous contact. The opposing team then has the advantage of eleven players against ten, which
regularly influences the result. Two other officials are known as assistant referees, who assist in deciding when the ball is outside the field
of play, when players break the rules, and in other issues.
This wide appeal of football has resulted, not solely from fans flooding into enormous arenas through the ticket points, but also from TV
coverage, where vast sums are paid for the finanacial advantages of televising fixtures. Going back to 1930 the most important trophy, the world
cup, was won in almost the same measure by European and Latin American nations. Global soccer is a very, very, big business. From turnstile
receipts, to TV rights, sponsorships, to copy football gear, a major industry has been created. Grown men and small boys, and quite a number of
girls and women, crave to wear the shirts of their popular clubs or players. Some dribble balls about in parks, wasteland, and even quiet
roads.
Talented footballers are emerging in various places that include, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Even in the USA, helped along by them hosting the
world cup in 1994. The Glazer family of Tampa Bay renown, have bought Manchester United, famous as the worlds richest football club. It would be
difficult to put a figure on the combined value of the best footballers, and the clubs they represent.
Until quite recently, boxing was one of the only sports, able to provide an avenue of opportunity, to escape from being impoverished. Since that
time football has created similar opportunities, and although only a few contenders make the grade as rich footballers, they outnumber those who
become rich as boxers. From Europe to South America, Australia, and elsewhere, children from deprived circumstances group together to develop
their game. Some could become recognized as being extraordinarily talented, and may be rewarded with wealthy lifestyles, to become pop stars, as
well known as movie stars and the like.
