players. Many of them boot balls around in parks, wasteland,
and also on quiet roads.
Football's global appeal is epitomized by the tournament highly
regarded as the World Cup. This football feast changes location
to various parts of the world, and there are group matches to
succeed in, before thirty two national teams battle for the
cup, at four yearly intervals, over a 4-week period. It is
reported, that the World Cup attracts an audience calculated to
be around twice as many, as those that view the Olympic
Games.
Until quite recently, boxing was one of the few sports,
providing any way of escape, from hopeless destitution. It
might be considered that football has created similar
opportunities, and though only a few contenders finish up as
highly paid soccer players, they outnumber those who earn a
substantial living in the ring. From Europe to South America,
Australia, and elsewhere, youngsters from poor countries group
together to develop their game. Some will make the grade as
being exceptionally gifted, and will be catapulted into wealthy
standards of living, to become football idols, of the sporting
world.
