Association Football, that is otherwise called soccer, or more usually football, is now the game with the most international support. The USA have a different national game also called football or American football which is quite different. Even though attempts have been made to develop the world game in their country, as yet they have not proved to be wholly successful, but it would be marvelous if they came on board with their South American neighbors.

People often underrate football, and the function of footballers, but the game involves perpetual practice. For this reason successful footballers are popstars, and the best of them can be paid salaries that amount to millions of dollars per annum. Rivalry to reach the highest standards is extreme, but there are many examples of talented children from poor surroundings, progressing to become first rate footballers. However, it must be said, that those that do reach the top, to be paid the millions, are something like one in a million, and the big majority will have to settle for being spectators.

There is a lot more to football than meets the eye, as it has far reaching commercial and cultural interests. Until fairly recently, it was entrance monies that were responsible for producing the money to sustain the clubs, but in recent times there have been radical changes that have transformed the sport into a worldwide leisure business. Huge sums of money are concerned in TV contracts, which has encouraged the brisk development in armchair viewing. Millions more supporters still pass through the turnstiles to watch their favorites. Sports have become big business, within which there is nothing bigger than worldwide football.

Sport in general, and football in particular, has done a great deal to improve international relationships. For instance there are some clubs, in the English Premier League, that have picked teams entirely consisting of foreign players. The main thing for the vast majority of supporters, isn't the color of a players skin, but his skill. Obviously the more accomplished a footballer becomes, the more desirable he is to clubs big enough, and well financed to afford his services. Thankfully top footballers continue to appear from all parts of the world.

There is no easy solution as to why worldwide soccer has expanded into the sporting enterprise it has become. It is amazing that two teams of eleven players, kicking a ball about for 90 minutes, with a short break part way through, gather such passionate attention. Possibly it is because there are young men, and sometimes young women, in the prime of their lives, who through their fitness, show off excitement in a game that people have played at college and beyond. It provides a chance, to wonder what might have been, if only you had considered sport as a career!
