One significant defender is known as the goalkeeper, who is the only member of a team who is allowed to handle the ball to protect his goal.

There is a lot more to football than meets the eye, as it has broad commercial and cultural implications. Previously, it was entrance receipts that were to the fore in producing the funds to finance the clubs, but in recent years there has been something of an explosion, that has developed the sport into a global leisure colossus. It is not easy to assess why international football has expanded into the sports enterprise it now is. You may wonder how it is that squads of eleven footballers, kicking a ball about for an hour and a half, with a fifteen-minute break in the middle, merit such zealous interest. Perhaps it is because there are young men, and sometimes young women, in great physical shape, who through their ability, present excitement in a game with which so many people can identify. It supplies an opportunity, to speculate on what might have been, if only you had thought about football as a profession!
