Although horse racing is known as the Sport of Kings, soccer, or football,, is the King of Sports. The name soccer is derived from the expression 'association football', and it serves to make a distinction between the global sport, from the totally different ballgame played in the United States. Groups of people have gathered together to boot a ball, or other spherical object about, for centuries. Rules for the game, we have come to know, were determined in the United Kingdom, in the mid nineteenth century. Before this the sport had a fairly flawed and aggressive reputation, to the extent that it was prohibited periodically, by royalty.

Whilst football has working class roots, there is more to the game than a newcomer may originally believe. Simply stated a football match comprises of eleven participants who oppose one another on a field of play, with dimensions of around 90 meters long x 45 meters wide. The objective is to score goals by manipulating the ball into the challengers goal, that is a structure measuring 7.3 meters wide X 2.4 meters high. Opposing teams comprise of defenders, midfielders, and attackers. One of the defenders is known as the goalkeeper, who may handle the ball to protect his goal.

Football's development is the outcome, not just from fans packing into huge sports grounds through the ticket points, but also from media cover, where vast sums are paid for the finanacial advantages of televising matches. Since 1930 the major award, the world cup, was won in roughly the same measure by European and South American countries. International soccer is a very, very, big industry. From turnstile receipts, to media rights, sponsorships, to copy football strips, a mammoth industry has come about. Small boys and grown men, and quite a number of women and girls, yearn to wear the sports attire of their favourite clubs or players. Many of them boot a ball about in parks, wasteland, and even quiet roads.

Sport in general, and football in particular, has done a great deal to improve international cooperation. For instance there are some clubs, in the English Premier League, that have selected teams wholly made up of overseas nationals. The main thing for most supporters, is not so much the nationality of a player, but his talent. The more skillful a footballer proves to be, the more desirable he is to clubs large enough, and sufficiently wealthy to afford his services. Fortunately top players continue to appear from all parts of the world.

Once upon a time, boxing was amongst few sports, that offered an avenue of opportunity, to escape from poverty. You may consider that football has created similar opportunities, and even though very few candidates progress to become professional football players, they outnumber those who succeed as boxers. From Europe to South America, Australia, and elsewhere, kids from poor backgrounds gather for football training. The odd one or two could become recognized as being exceptionally talented, and may be catapulted into opulent lifestyles, to become pop stars, of the sporting world.
