cover, where fortunes are paid for the privilege of televising fixtures. Thinking back to 1930 the most significant award, the world cup, was won
in almost equal measure by European and South American national teams. Intercontinental football is a a gigantic business. From turnstile
receipts, to television rights, well known sponsors, to replica football strips, a mammoth industry has arisen. Grown men and small boys, and
many girls and women, crave to wear the sports attire of the top clubs or star players. Many of them boot a ball about in parks, wasteland, and
even quiet roads.
Football's global appeal is epitomized by the tournament identified as the World Cup. The tournament changes location to various parts of the
world, and there are group matches to pass, before thirty two national teams compete for the trophy, at four yearly intervals, winning or losing,
until the final is reached. It is reported, that the FIFA World Cup attracts viewers and spectators estimated to be about twice as many, as those
that view the Summer Olympic Games.
There was a time, when boxing was amongst few sports, that offered an avenue of opportunity, to escape from poverty. It might be considered that
football has created similar opportunities, and even though only a small number of aspirants progress to become wealthy football players, they
exceed those who earn a substantial living as boxers. All over the world young people from ordinary circumstances gather to develop their game.
One or two will make the grade as being extraordinarily gifted, and will be catapulted into wealthy lifestyles, to become football idols,
comparable to movie stars and suchlike.
